Summer is coming to an end soon and drivers will once again experience challenging weather conditions. Driving in poor weather conditions increases the likelihood of motor vehicle accidents. With the greater risk of accidents, drivers are exposed to another commonly known, but often overlooked, hazard in regards to prevention.

I’m talking about the hazard of working alone. Most drivers do not have the ability to contact help if they are involved in a serious accident. As a result, emergency response teams are unable to reach the driver and provide them with the medical attention they need.

Several drivers work alone while making trips to various destinations. It is important to have check-in procedures to ensure their safety. One of the procedures should have drivers check in with dispatch on a regular basis while on the road. Dispatch has the responsibility to respond appropriately if a driver fails to check in.

With a greater availability and selection of working alone apps and tracking tools, the task of checking in with a driver is much easier than it was in the past. Regardless of how an employer checks in with a driver, it is important to ensure adequate procedures are in place.

Speak with one of our Health and Safety Advisors about legal obligations related to working alone by calling 1-877-414-8001 or 604-888-2242. It’s why we’re here.
