Summer vacation is around the corner, and students will be fresh off a long semester of being buried in books. This means they will be out there looking for work to pay off student loans or save up for another year of school.

New HireIs your employer prepared to orient these newbies to a workplace full of hazards? Well, hopefully not so many hazards because you as a diligent employer will do your best to eliminate hazards, or at the very least mitigate them to a safe level.

There are several details an employer must cover to ensure their employee orientation is in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Below is a short list of items that must be met to be compliant. The complete list of items are listed in Part 3 of OHS Regulations.

  1. Explain to them the rights they are entitled to as employees – contact a SafetyDriven advisor if you don’t know or forgotten the three rights (we won’t judge J)
  2. Convey to them what the health and safety rules are in the workplace,  covering such things as working alone, violence in the workplace, and personal protective equipment
  3. Make sure they are aware of hazards they are exposed to
  4. Inform them of where the first aid facilitates are and the means of summoning first aid
  5. Outline the emergency response procedures in place
  6. Provide instruction and demonstration of the employee’s new tasks

Of course further orientation will be required if the employee cannot adequately perform their job or if the employee requests it. SafetyDriven – TSCBC offers an assortment of solutions.  If employers are interested in finding out more, feel free to contact us at 604-888-2242.
