Looking at temperatures throughout BC we can see its going to be hot this first weekend in July. Metro – Vancouver is sitting in the mid-20s, while places such as Port Alberni and Kelowna are reaching as high as 34 degrees Celsius.

The heat has brought on a number of issues, including forest fires, dehydration and heat exhaustion. Anyone can consider themselves lucky if the only thing they have had is a sun burn.

A common issue employees should be concerned with this time of the year is heat stress. There are many different ways to experience heat stress.

It is important for each employee to be able to recognize the signs at an early stage. Early treatment is best when controlling issues related to heat stress.

The different types of heat stress include heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. More information on heat stress can be found in this booklet provided by WorkSafeBC: Preventing Heat Stress at Work.
