Summer Weather Increases Risks Due to More Road Users

The weather has warmed up as the days of summer have arrived. Warmer weather means more road users; especially cyclists and pedestrians.

With all the road users during the summer months, a driver’s job can become more challenging. Not only do drivers have to take care of their own safety, they must be cautious of all other road users.

The road users that each driver has to be cautious of include other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Each poses a different risk to drivers.

There are more outdoor activities people take part in, including picnics, baseball games, and sightseeing. Therefore, the summer months will likely bring out other drivers who always seem to be in a hurry.

There are several drivers who are unaware of the limitations of large commercial trucks. This often leads to unsafe driving. In most situations a truck driver will have to adapt, accommodate and be patient with other road users.

Cycling has become more popular in recent years. The city of Prince George is installing 60 new bike racks in downtown in an effort to increase business for local shops.

Cyclist are often difficult to see, especially looking through a side view mirror. Keeping an eye out for them is a challenge, so be sure to scan around while driving. Check the CAA Bike Safety website for other tips to avoid a collision.

Far more pedestrians are on the roads during the summer. You will see a number of kids walking to the local park or mothers taking their kids out in a stroller.

Pedestrians are often at risk because they may be distracted while using a phone just as a driver would. It’s important for each driver to keep an eye out for each pedestrians, especially at crosswalks.

The summer months are a great time of the year for most people to go out enjoy the outdoors. Let’s keep the summer cool by staying safe.
