While a shortage of drivers is an industry-wide problem, the impact an individual employer will notice will vary. Regardless of whether or not employees leave, the overall pool of drivers in the industry is also decreasing.

Rather than looking into the reasons why drivers are leaving the industry, it would be worthwhile looking into business practices which could help keep drivers on the road. While this blog will not look into all the practices possible, it will focus on one important health and safety practice.

One of the key aspects of workplace health and safety is the ability to recognize hazards and evaluate their potential impact. The better a company is able to do that, the safer the employees will be; assuming appropriate controls are developed.

Frontline employees not only have a better understanding of hazards, but they also understand the extent of the impact hazards have on their safety.

Speaking with frontline staff about hazards not only improves an employer’s ability to recognize and evaluate hazards, it also demonstrates the value of employee opinions and concerns about workplace safety to the employer.

By demonstrating they see value in employee concerns about health and safety employers can strengthen their organization’s safety culture. There are a number of things an employee will value through a career. One of those is the comfort of having safe place to work.

While speaking with employees will not completely resolve the driver shortage issue, it is one of the methods an employer can use to improve the value an employee has within a company.
